1、call

We have decided we will call the baby Mary. ③ emit characteristic sound: (鸟、兽)鸣、啼; ④ communicate with by radio or telephone: 打电话给,用电话传递; eg. I called her on the telephone. ⑤ summon: 呼唤,召唤,传唤; ⑥ make brief visit: 短暂访问,拜访; eg. We call on them at their home. ⑦ order to take place: 下令举行,宣布召开;
Noun. ① shout: 喊,叫喊; eg. We heard a call at that night. ② birds cry: 鸟鸣; ③ brief visit: 短暂访问; ④ telephone conversation: (一次)通话/电话; eg. I have been expecting your call.

2、effect
Noun. ① result, consequence: 结果,后果; eg. The effects of the storm could be seen in the morning. ② efficacy:功效,效力,效果; eg. The medicine had an immediate effect. ③ impression, physical phenomenon: 印象,影响,效应; eg. Special lighting gave the effect of moonlight. ④ (~s) possession: 财物,财产。
Verb. bring about:生效,实施,招致。
Correlative Phrases: take effect: become active/begin to perate, 引起,使生效,实施。eg. The new regulation will take effect at once.
Remark: Usage 用法 As a verb., effect should not be confused with affect: effect作动词时不能与affect混淆。 eg. He effected an entrance means 'He got in (somehow)', but This won't affect me means 'My life won't be changed by this': He effected an entrance意为“他(想了办法)还是进去了”;而This won't affect me则意为“我的生活不会因此而改变。”
